Survivor: Nicaragua Episode 10 - Random Thoughts

* I was all set on doing a rare Live Blog of last night's episode from my Dad's house, but damn it all, couldn't find anyone's wi-fi connection to steal. If there's an ep next week, perhaps...

* Christ, Purple Kelly is a moron, and she hasn't said more than 40 words onscreen this season.

* Both sides screwed up pretty badly last night. Holly impressed me a bit by waking up from the blank stare that normally inhabits her face and formulating a plan, but they sure as shit weren't sly with it.

* Sash was thinking short-term, and though it might work out for him, had he given Brenda the idol, it'd now be him, her, Kelly and Chase vs. five instead of the current (maybe; Naonka's a damn wild card) six-three.

* Alina cleans up nicely.

* On the other side of that is this: with Holly et al screaming "Brenda" from the rooftops, they should have just voted out Chase on the down low. He didn't have a target, Sash wouldn't have given him the idol (had no one spilled the beans) and there wouldn't be any danger of one of their own getting surprised.

* Either way, I loved the way the show played out because Brenda's and Sash's heads were bigger than that volcano the Reward Challenge winners went to. They needed to be taken down a peg, and they got a hell of a lot more than that. Also, I'm rooting for Ben and Fabio at this point, and they seem to be more in power now, so yeah.

* #(*%^ing idiots...wood chests right next to a fire...

* I'm not positive, but I think Chase wanted Benry gone last night. Does that sound right? I mean, I could be mistaken; it's not like we heard him say that 49 times in 16 minutes or anything.

* Two solid challenges. The barrel-plank-rope one might not have been, but it seemed like something we hadn't seen anything like before (though I still have yet to figure out what the purpose of the ropes was). Meanwhile, you ought to know that I'm a fan of stamina, "how bad do you want it?" Immunity Challenges, and twice now the elderly-yet-strong-and-thin Jane has come out on top. Say whatever you want about her gristly personality, she's a gamer and a tough s.o.b.

Until next time...

The State of the Cabins (10/20/10) (11/17/10)

Editor's note: I wrote most of this on October 20th, but have yet to post it. Some of it's outdated (the book stuff), but the rest is all good. New one maybe next week!

Movies watched for the first time (non-theatrically) since last week:
* Battle Royale
Nick pushed me to read the book, and I did (you can read my thoughts on it in past States). Then he pushed for me to see the adaptation, even going so far (and being so kind) as to mail the DVD to me. Survey says...

I wonder if I'll ever like a movie more after reading the book first, or vice versa. I just don't think I'm wired that way. The only circumstance I can think that might fit such a scenario would be if I were to not like the first form of media, in which case I would most likely not wish to experience the second form. As it was, I enjoyed the book Battle. The filmed version is...ok.

In fact, it's probably better than that. It's an entertaining film, capturing the essence of the book just fine. Really, it would be a grand failure had they not, considering that the premise is so disarmingly simple. 42 students shipped to a remote island and forced to kill each other. Obviously, in a two-hour movie, you're not going to be able to give a lot of backstory or add much character to the characters - hell, the book was even terribly flat for a number of characters. The grand shame (and I know Nick agrees with me on this point) is that they failed to keep the one, true relationship and heart of the story (the bond former between Shuya and Shogo) intact. Shuya remains our protagonist, but he's mostly a vehicle for the events going on around him. Meanwhile, Shogo - while not as butchered as Nick would have you believe - is still a cool customer but is one whose role in the film has been drastically trimmed.

Meanwhile, just about every other character short of the "instructor" (who has been given a new identity and backstory) has been reduced to stereotype at best. Several players in the book might as well have not been in the film at all, their storylines so removed (Shinji). When I was reading the book, I was thinking that if I were to have made a film of it, I would have just cut the number of students to begin with (down to 24 or so) simply to avoid this problem. It's not as if there weren't several expendable ones.

In terms of the production itself, it's spotty. The location and setup of the island is remarkably similar to the book, though the exclusion of the four ships circling the island leads to questions about why the characters don't ponder swimming away (an option not afforded to them in literary form). The classical music that's used as accents to the more violent scenes is well-chosen and beautiful (Woo could learn a lesson) but the instrumental score itself is overbearing at times and downright annoying at others - I often thought I was watching a film from the 50s. The acting is as strong as can be expected from a film of this nature.

Most surprising to me was how un-violent the film turned out to be, given the source material. The book is rather explicit, not only in terms of volume (to be expected with 40-something deaths) but in the details of each. The movie, on the other hand, while it has its blood-spurting moments, is rather tame, especially considering what I expected from a Japanese film. I guess the exploitation of teens could only go so far.

Music I'm currently obsessed with:
As you might know, I had myself a little birthday over this past weekend. Amongst my booty, I finally got the soundtrack to Amelie. This of course means that I had to listen to it again, and this of course means that I have had "La Valse d'Amelie" stuck in my head on repeat for the last several days. Never, ever, ever gets old...

Book I'm currently reading:
* Per Jess (I believe), I'm reading David Baldacci's The Camel Club. It's a political conspiracy theory thriller (page turner) that I imagine will read similarly to a Dan Brown book, minus the puzzle aspect (I've not read a Baldacci novel before).

It's alright so far. I'm not engrossed with it, and am put off a bit by the occasions when Baldacci condescends his readers by doing something like writing "RPG" and then two sentences later explaining what that is (it's all done very unnaturally), but otherwise I imagine it'll be a breezy read.

Hereafter, Due Date, Conviction and Mortality

I can't stop thinking about death lately. (Yes, it's the rare introspective post here at BC.)

For starters, Mrs. Fletch and I have spent the better part of the last two months or so catching up on Dexter, the popular drama that focuses on a serial killer. For a program in which it seems like somebody is getting offed each episode, it doesn't treat the loss of lives lightly, but the volume speaks for itself. No one is safe.

As casual readers of Blog Cabins may not know, this was followed up by some real-life drama - the death of my mother four weeks ago. Were it not for that, I'd likely not be writing this post right now. As you might expect, it has shaken my world. I was very close to my mother - emotionally and geographically (my parents house is four doors down from my own) - her passing was a nightmare of a shock, and has affected all facets of my life, right on down to this here site, which as you've probably noticed, has taken quite the downturn in activity in the last month.

There's no escaping the morbid, heavy thoughts that have accompanied this event, but I, probably just like you might, have attempted to do so ever so slightly via the vehicle that's been there all along - the movies. That, however, isn't proving all that fruitful, either.

The first case was one I walked into with eyes wide open. A couple weeks ago, we decided to see a movie, and Hereafter seemed simultaneously like the best and worst choice. Clint Eastwood's latest film is all about...you guessed it, the afterlife. It tells three separate stories - one of a woman who is brought back from the dead, or so she thinks, another of a man "cursed" with the supernatural ability to speak to the dead, and the third of a young boy who's lost his twin brother. No shock, it was a difficult watch, but I almost felt like it was an important one. That said, I think my ability to judge it on its own merits flew out the window before I sat down.

Next up was Todd Phillips' successor to The Hangover, Due Date. But where most saw little more than an unfunny flick that apes Planes, Trains and Automobiles, I found myself affected by the situation that Zach Galifianakis' character is in: the narrative starts in Atlanta, where Zach has just returned from his father's funeral, carrying a Lebowski-like coffee can filled with his ashes. Never in a million years would I have thought that movie could bring me to tears, but I'm finding that scenario play out in unexpected ways lately.

Finally, tonight brought a viewing of the based-on-true-events drama Conviction, starring Hilary Swank as a wannabe (and eventual) lawyer attempting to get her brother's, um, conviction for first-degree murder overturned. It wasn't even the murdered body that got to me - that person is barely shown and really plays litte role in the film. Instead, I was treated to another funeral scene and the death of a loved one, who really was pretty much an ancillary character as well. Didn't matter.

The short of it can probably be summed up with this (somewhat annoying to hear right now) maxim: It's all a part of growing up. Five weeks ago, seeing Beardo (trademark Jess) with an urn or watching Rockwell and Swank attend the funeral of a minor character or even seeing the onscreen death of a young boy wouldn't have affected me all that much. I'd sympathize but not empathize. As I type those words I feel guilty all over again, for I've experienced the death of loved ones in the past, but something about those circumstances (either I didn't know them as well or their passings were more "expected" due to age) just don't match this one. Then again, we only get one Mom.

I really don't know where else to go with this post. I guess I just felt the need to get something down about my recent experiences with these three movies, and melancholy as it may be, these will be my takeaways from them. However, I can tell you that, my connection to it notwithstanding, Due Date doesn't really need to be seen by anyone. so there's that.

P.S. - It's largely unrelated to all this, but I'd like to take this space to once again (or for the first time) thank all of you that have more than been there for me. The response from my little community and that of the LAMB has been overwhelming. Really, it's been awesome, from emails I've gotten from some of you to mentions on podcasts to, of course, Rachel offering up her services to shepherd the LAMB going forward. You guys and gals rock, and your support has really meant a lot to me. I'm still not really feeling the urge to post here daily or anything like that, but I'm sure I'll get in the groove here eventually, and I hope you'll still be here with me to revel in shit like Road House and whether or not I'm gonna see the latest p.o.s. to hit theaters. At the very least, I'll be heading up the LAMBcast every week, so as long as you dig my dulcet tones, you're in business.

TGITDNMAR (11/5/10)

KV here again, taking a look at the weekend’s new release for good old Irwin:

Due Date

So this one is Galifiniakas latest movie of the 20 flicks he signed on for post-Hangover fame, and playing the straight man in this one is the great Robert Downey, Jr., the plot appears to be a buddy road trip flick, with Zack playing a wacky psycho. It will probably be mildly amuising, but I like the rest of the nation am pretty upset with Gallifin these days for getting up on his high horse and being too pious to work with the great Mel Gibson. Props to Downey for calling out this jerk, and pointing out that Mel had worked with him when he was a drug addict criminal and Hollywood tried to blacklist him. On a scale of Hollywood offenses yelling at your wife is pretty low on the Richter scale, besides obviously that B had it coming.

KV’s chances of seeing in theatre: 10%

Megamind

Some animated flick with Will Ferrell doing some voices, I’m not really into the whole animated flicks, maybe I’ll catch this one and all those Pixar flicks down the line if I move out to the suburbs, raise rugrats, and live happily ever after…

KV’s chances of seeing in theatre: 0%

Fair Game

This apparently is a remake of the Cindy Crawford/Billy Baldwin classic from the 90s, from what I remember they were running around Russia, blowing up trains or something, I think there was a nude scene or two, which is probably the only reason anyone went to see it. Naomi Watts apparently stars in this one, but its rated PG-13, might want to skip this one…

KV’s chances of seeing in theatre: 0%

For Colored Girls

A bunch of black girls probably do some black stuff in this one, it looks like this one is made by Tyler Perry, so surely he’ll be popping up in drag throughout this sure to be clunker, I’ll probably skip out.

KV’s chances of seeing in theatre: 0%

So looks like a pretty weak crop of movies this weekend, I’ll probably make it out at some point this week, I’m seeing some new girl, I dunno right now though it looks like I’ll be deciding between Jackass or maybe Secreteriat…

Survivor Live (day after) Blog?!?!

Morning kids, pinch hitting for my boy Ir while he’s on a mini sabbatical, as I e-mailed Irwin last night this season of Survivor is so painfully bad its almost enjoyable, if for nothing else than to fuel your hatred for humanity. Anyway I caught about 15 minutes of the ep last night between channel surfing and binge-drinking, so I’m not quite going in fresh, but I will quasi live-blog this baby while I watch it on my computer, so let’s see what’s going on this season in Survivor…

0:00 – So I guess the point of this season was, umm we know we’re on the last legs of the show, so we’ll throw in a celebrity to tide you over until we do another Russel vs. Rob season, poor work by the producers not rigging the game to keep in Jimmy Johnson though, couldn’t they have put him on a team with hardcore Cowboys or Hurricane fans, the ratings must have dropped off a cliff after Episode 3…

3:24 - So for some reason they are merging the tribes with about 15 people this year, I guess when the footage is this painfully boring the producers were forced to throw in some bizarre twists…

5:32 – I can’t even remember the alliances, I know the old cripple Dan is Marty’s follower, and the psycho black chick (Nayonke?) was in some poorly conceived minority alliance with Brenda the Asian chick, I’m still rooting for Jimmy Johnson…

8:16 – This is about the time I bailed last night, I’ve started surfing the net on my second screen, man these people are boring, let’s make a list of people we know/care about as of now…
-Naonke – the psycho black chick, very hateable, at least she goes out of her way to be a good villain, didn’t she threaten a one-legged chick a few eps back?
-Brenda – The hot Asian chick, she’s pretty annoying, and pure evil, but I guess she’s the brains behind the power alliance
-Marty – The old “strategizer”, clssic overcompensater who has watched every season, and tries too hard, this jerk voted off Jimmy Johnson because he was jealous that America would think Jimmy was the protagonist of the season over him…
-Fabio – a happy go lucky simpleton, at least watching him makes us at home feel smarter…
-The hot blonde chick – In a season this thin, why not put her at the forefront, maybe base an episode on her quest to find a good tanning spot…

11:12 – A coworker just stopped by to discuss football picks, (I paused the ep) my lock of the week is the Bears by the by… (more on this in my TGIF edition)

12:35 – So Nayonka just made her wacky move to steal a bunch of food, wow caught a little bit of this last night, but yeah probably not smart, at least Rusty stole all his stuff when everyone was asleep…

14:40 – Naayonka is already posturing for jury votes? Has survivor ever had a jury of 15 people?

15:58 – Ha, Nayunka just got outted for stealing stuff, by Fabio of all people, this is why you don’t stir waves when you’re in a power position, she has an immunity idol, for some reason she has the numbers, and she is making wacky moves, not smart, every season there are some wacky panic moves, I never understand them, I mean for a million dollars I’d happily go 39 days without any food, without seeing anyone, but these people always catch island fever and make crazy moves

22:00 – So it’s time for the first immunity challenge, I guess theyre doing one for boys and girls, why not do one for fogeys and one for young uns, I guess I like the mix-up, when there are twice as many people as a usual merger why not have twice as many immunity idols? Hey remember that medallion of power they trotted out for the first 2 episodes, that was funny…

26:00 – So the annoying old country woman won immunity, she’s the one who flipped on her tribe because the young people “liked” her, not exactly a master of strategy right there, she has no chance to win…

29:16 – Wow the gay guy is actually honoring his word, this is unprecedented in Survivor, he really endeared himself to me right there, annoying old country woman is still posturing against good old Marty, she’s worried Marty will win immunity the next 20 times and make the finals… there are 15 people in the merged trible, even Colby only won immunity 12 times in a row

31:52 – Marty is going out of his way to overstrategize and annoy people, can’t blame him for not trusting the word of a Survivor…

33:34 – They are trying to swing Fabs to their anti-Marty alliance, he’s a huge Marty fan for some reason, I think Marty told him the movie Bobby Fisher was based on his life a few eps back, Fabs is such a good-natured simpleton… for the record the people I like thusfar are… Fabs, Gay Guy (he really won me over by honoring his word), Hot Blonde chick, and maybe Marty (I love a good villain, and at least he’s interesting), and of course Jimmy Johnson (can we get a wacky Survivor twist to bring him back??)…

36:56 – Ha, Marty is opening an open frontal attack at Jane, pointing out that people would have to be functional retards to keep her around, this group is so stupid though that probably hadn’t occurred to them until then, I doubt any of them are thinking long-term…

38:58 – Elena (?) is playing the swing vote card, probably a little early for that, there’s never been a merged tribe of 40 people, no one needs a swing vote now, plus this crowd is too stupid to know how to use a swing vote… reminds me of on the Apprentice when Trump bragged everyone had an IQ over 150, Probst must only select people with IQs under Forrest Gump’s 75

42:00 – If Probst reads the first vote for someone, you know they’re safe, he’s the master of showing votes in a way to build suspense, it’s gotten predictable Jeffrey, the first two seasons he’d just reach into the urn and randomly read the names… Alina got voted off

42:45 – Still seems like a pretty boring season, there is an alliance of about 35 people, and all of them are too stupid to make a power play, so it appears they’ll just pick of the 5 people not in their alliance, and then realize “wait a second, it might not have been smart to make a 35 person alliance to get me to the end”…

44:00 - Also, just I did some Wikipedia research, Jeff said Alena was the first member of the jury, and there are 11 people left, meaning if there is a two person final there will be a ten person jury, and if there is a three person final there will be a 9 person jury, the only way to eliminate an option of a tie is to have an 11 person final next week, and Elena be the only person to vote… so as usual I will be rooting for the tie, why not just have a two-person final with an odd numbered jury, why even keep the chance for a tie and the show to look like idiots, it makes no sense to me… I mean does the BCS ever look smart in college football when 4 teams have a claim at the national title every year??? Nice work Survivor, this season is a trainwreck, but on the plus side this trainwreck already made them retool next season, celebrities include: Russell, Kimbo Slice, and Carrie Prejean… could be some interesting watching…
