Ladies of the 90s Tournament - Round 1: Halle Berry (2) vs. Ashley Judd (7)

Previous results: Sandra Bullock won, but perhaps not as handily as a one-seed ought to. Still, in a pretty sound drubbing, she took out Liv Tyler to the tune of 21-9. Click here to view the updated full bracket.

Halle Berry

Comments: It didn't take long for Halle to bust out in Hollywood. After being a beauty queen in her late teens (1986 Miss USA runner-up!), she quickly transitioned from model to actress, and within two years of starting her career, she was playing Damon Wayans' love interest in The Last Boy Scout. Even more high-profile (if not commercially successful) supporting roles followed, and by 1995 she was the lead in Losing Isaiah opposite Jessica Lange. Since then, she's bounced around between leading and supporting roles, but her hotness has remained remarkably consistent.
90s Highlights: The Last Boy Scout, Strictly Business, Boomerang, Executive Decision, Bulworth

Ashley Judd

Comments: Like yesterday's contestant in this spot, Ms. Judd was quasi-famous before she even started acting, known to America as "that other Judd" (aka the non-singing one). But she broke out in 1993's Ruby In Paradise, paving the way for some high profile supporting roles in such films as Heat and A Time to Kill (where, interestingly, she played Matt McConnaughey's wife opposite yesterday's winner, husband-steal Sandra Bullock). Then came Kiss the Girls, and her career of playing Women In Trouble™ in barely-a-step-beyond Lifetime movies kicked off.
90s Highlights: Heat, A Time to Kill, Kiss the Girls, Double Jeopardy

I think this is going to be a tight one and, for me, Judd's 90s films > Berry's 90s films.

I've seen movies with both these actresses but didn't remember them being in their prospective films. So yea, both of them suck.

Maybe I haven't watched enough 90s films, but so far I've been underwhelmed by just about every actress you've posted about so far.

Halle Berry is hotter!

Halle is so hot I can barely stand it.

I think Judd is a decent actor, she just doesn't choose/get decent roles.

Judd is pretty darn good (though less attractive) in 2007's "BUG" with Michael Shannon. Good little genre film that just might get under your skin.

I can't believe that Judd is winning this. She's cute and all, but it's no contest, and Halle was in some cool movies in the 90s.

@ FI - I dunno - this is pretty close. They were both in some solid films and stinkers. I'd say their resume is close to even, with maybe a slight edge to Judd.

@ James - seriously, there's some 90s goodness (and badness, but in a good way) to be found here.

Underwhelmed even by Uma? I realize the rest haven't exactly been acting heavyweights, though I don't know how many of them we're gonna see in this tourney...

@ Castor - Amen, and it's not even close!

@ Blake - More than that, I think Judd actively has terrible taste. She should have been a bigger star, but it's almost as if her parts in good films are accidental...

@ Andrew - ...though, yes, Bug was an interesting and fun flick. Unfortunately, it was, like you said, in 2007. 90s!

Halle is hotter, but Judd's 90s movies are far more memorable to me... so I went with Judd.

Uma is good when paired with QT, she's passable in Pulp Fiction, probably the weakest performance in the film, but is very good in the Kill Bill films. However, everything else she is in she's almost always awkward or terrible.

Ruby In Paradise is enough to give Judd the win against any other competitor. Unfortunately Halle got my vote purely based on looks. Shallow...I know.

I'm going underdog on all of these!

@ James - You no like Gattaca?

@ CS - I can't blame you one bit. Halle all the way.

@ Kai - We'll see about that...
