The State of the Cabins (4/14/10)

Split off from Tuesday's Things to Click On, where these musings never really made much sense, this weekly post will be short, simple, opinionated and to the point. What have I recently watched, read, and/or listened to. As per usual, the movies watched won't cover new releases, as I'm still holding out hope that one day I'll get back to writing reviews (I have like 10 review shells in draft mode as constant reminders).

Movies watched for the first time (non-theatrically) since last week:
* RocknRolla - It's safe to say that after Swept Away and Revolver bombed critically and commercially that Guy Ritchie sought desperately to get back in the public's good graces. He did so by more or less replicating what made his first two movies so good - snappy dialogue, colorful characters, a deep cast of character actors, and all in all just more of that London underbelly. This one makes for a fun watch, but lacks the crispness of Snatch and Lock, Stock. Overall, it's not quite as memorable, but a decent return to form, and hell, it's that rarest of things: a movie Gerard Butler can be proud to have on his resume.

Music I'm currently obsessed with:
* I don't know if I'd go so far as to say I'm obsessed, but I've had many a song from Kings of Leon's first album, Youth and Young Manhood stuck in my head all week. I hate to be one of those people that yearns for the good olde days of a band's early albums, but I've tried and tried to love their latest disc, aka the one that invaded middle America, and I just don't. Sure, the big hits are catchy, but overall, it's got nothing on their first two albums. Youth rocks much harder, and is filled with stompers that will get in your melon and never get out.

Here's what might be the catchiest, "Molly's Chambers." Try to escape that bass line:

Book I'm currently reading:
I'm about to enter a short-term depression. I've only about 50 pages left in The Girl Who Played with Fire, the follow-up to Dragon Tattoo, and I dare say I'm liking it even more than the first. The third book isn't released for another six weeks or so, so I'm having to find another book (or two) to sustain me until my pre-ordered copy of that one hits my mailbox. Of course, the real sad times will come after I finish the third with the knowledge that the author is dead and likely won't be publishing any more books (short of a Tupac/Biggie-like deal that allows him to keep writing for years after his demise).

I was practically dragged to see RocknRolla in the theater (after Ritchie's previos bombs gave me painful memories) and was pleasantly surprised with its awesomeness. I just figured his divorce from Madonna got his filmmaking back on track.

Rachel - That sounds like a more than viable theory.

That's an awesome song.

I didn't really care for RocknRolla... and I can't stand Kings of Leon. I think that, after U2, they are one of the most overrated bands out there.

"and I can't stand Kings of Leon."

That's because all you've heard is stuff from their most recent album...and it was played to death. How dare you.

You're certainly right that their new stuff is played to death, and I'm sick of it. However, I used to work with this girl who was obsessed with them about 3-4 years ago before they became uber-popular, and I couldn't stand them then, either.

Nick - I fart in your general direction. :P
