Ladies of the 80s Tournament - Round 1: Jennifer Connelly (4) vs Jennifer Grey (5)

Let's get this off to a rip-roaring start with a 4 seed/5 seed matchup. Even better, a matchup between two Jennifers. Click here to view the full bracket. Here are the resumes:

Jennifer Connelly

Breakdown: Kind of an odd (creepy) choice for this tournament as she was all of 16 in her breakout performance in Labyrinth, but then again, most readers of this blog weren't legal either in 1986. Also, despite the big name she has now, she really wasn't in much else in the 80s. Her much bigger breakout came in the early 90s with The Hot Spot and Career Opportunities (though they sure seem like 80s flicks, don't they?).
80s Highlights: Labyrinth, Phenomena

Jennifer Grey

Breakdown: It's funny, I always knew that Alan Ruck was practically a septugenarian when he played Cameron Frye and that Matthew Broderick wasn't far behind, but I never knew until just now that Grey was in the same ballpark as the guys, co-starring as Jeanie Bueller at age 26 in 1986 (which makes her portrayal as "Baby" in the following year's Dirty Dancing even weirder somehow). Famously got a nose job sometime in the 90s that completely destroyed her career, even though it's hard to argue that it didn't make her better looking.
80s Highlights: Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Dirty Dancing, Red Dawn

I would argue that the nose job didn't make Jennifer Grey look better. Personally I think the nose job just made her look far too generic. Of course, I am not always the best indicator for what most men find attractive.

This thing needs more pictures. Connelly is the easiest choice she was a certified sex symbol in the 80's, she had some meat on her bones now she's kinda anorexic looking. Her films were mediocre, but I've honestly never even heard of the other option.

Rick - I can certainly see that argument - her blending in more is part of what killed her career. But she sure did have one hell of a scnozz...

AnswerMVP - I don't know about that, and that was kind of my point - I think that's revisionist history. A sex symbol in the 80s? When she was 16 and wearing baggy sweaters in Labyrinth? And she wasn't even in anything else of consequence. The early 90s were her prime-time.

When you say you've never heard of the other option, are you referring to Phenomena or Jennifer Grey? I'd never heard of Phenomena either, but it had a bunch of votes on IMDb and is a horror flick by Daria Argento, so I assumed there were many that were aware of it. Of course, Connelly was only 15 in that...eesh.

Oh man hands down, Jennifer Connelly.

I know it doesn't fall in the 80s, but nothing beats the horse ride in Career Opportunities :)

I wouldn't be surprised if she made the Final Four even.

Rick Bman said...

Yeah, she had a bit of a schnoz but then I have always had a thing for Jewish chicks.

Snipes said...

@Fletch - ah yes I'm thinking about the 90's, although Some Girls (1988) I think is when she when that stage of her career began.

I've heard of Phenomena, I've never heard of Jennifer Grey, probably because I've never seen any of those films.

No question. Jennifer Connelly! I was going to mention the horse ride in career opportunities, but nick Cage beat me to it.

Sadly, she is currently a member of Bill Simmons' Lindsay Lohan allstars (girls who got too skiinny and lost there best assets).

Fletch said...

Nic - Yea, it was easy selection for me, too. A real mismatch here - it's hard for us not to be influenced by her later "work."

Rick - so you're a bizarro shicksa (sp) then?

AnswerMVP - you may be right. I've never seen Some Girls.

I won't be the millionth person to ask you how it is that you haven't seen Ferris Bueller. No, I won't do that at all. :D

JSR - well, yes and no. I think as evidenced by the pic shown here depicting her as a youngin that the loss of baby fat did wonders. But I think she looks great to this day, despite the slight shrinkage of said assets (as does Lohan - though she fluctuates a bit, it seems).

Snipes said...

@Fletch - because while I was born in the early 80's I never got caught up in the "classic" 80's films, when I was a teenager of the 90's.

Totally Connelly, but that is a mighty hot picture of Grey.

I think everyone's looking at this the wrong way. I think it's about when you think of 80's which of these girls do you think THE MOST and Jennifer Grey had more of a carrer in the 80's than Connelly. I thought she was only in Labyrith in the 80's. Again, I watch movies called "Oversexed Rugsucker From Mars" so what do I know.
-Jason, born 1980 so nyah!

Nick said...

Jason: I'm pretty sure it's "Which one is hotter"?

I agree with The Answer that this thing needs more picture. One thing I have learned from this type of contest is that the organizer can sway votes a certain way simply by the way he chooses pictures ;)

Fletch said...

AnswerMVP - I saw that, but I also saw that you had the Indy Jones trilogy listed as a favorite on your profile. It's probably too late, but Ferris really is a must-see and I'm probably biased, but I think it's aged pretty well overall. And that's all I'll say on the subject.

Nick - I agree on both counts. It's about the best pic of Grey I saw.

Jason - your point is very valid, and one I tried to incorporate into the seeds (which somewhat explains why Grey is a 5). There are some of the ladies that are both hot and were wildly famous in the 80s. Others have only one of those traits, or both to varying degrees. But their level of fame (and 80s icon-ness) seems an important factor to me.

Castor - ok, noted. I'll try to do better on the pic front. Doing this from work (in many cases) will make it somewhat difficult, but I'll try to paint a broader picture.

seems a little lopsided for a 4/5 matchup ;)

Connelly before the brows --- oh yeah. I was like 9 when I saw career Opps and JC was my first whoa, girls are pretty moment

Jennifer Connely is more now (and more ever)
Jennifer Grey was more 80´s.
Jennifer Grey it is.

Jason Soto said...

Ok, I'll reword my answer.

I'd fuck 80's Jennifer Grey, but I'd fuck 90's and present day Jennifer Connolly. Since this is about 80's chicks: ba-dow!
-Jason

Fletch said...

Red Carpet - I would agree with you, but Wampa and Jason illustrate the point I've been bringing up as the counter to the pro-Connelly camp.

That said, I voted for Connelly as well. ;)

Wampa - It is you! It is you! Welcome back, Obi Wan to my Anakin. Hope things are slowing down in the real world for ya.

Jason - there's a reason you're considered a wordsmith on par with the Beastie Boys...well put.
