TGITDNMAR (8/21/09)

It's that time again for TGITDNMAR, which (obviously) stands for Thank God It's The Day New Movies Are Released.

Inglorious Basterds
By all accounts, I should be anticipating this much more than I currently am. Tarantino? Check. Pitt? Check. ???

Perhaps it's those question marks that are leaving me wanting more. Eli Roth is annoying. Diane Kruger can't act her way out of a plastic bag. There's pretty much no one else of note involved. The plot...let's just say I'm finding it a bit thin. And I'm no fan of torture porn, even when the torture is being performed on Nazis.

So basically, what we're left with is a case of STYLE vs. substance. Like 300, only without the CGI effects and homoeroticism. I'm sure I'll see it, but it'll be done moreso out of loyalty to QT than anything else.

Post Grad
I'd barely heard of this prior to today.

I'd like to keep it that way. You probably would, too.

Well, I'd say Michael Fassbender and Daniel Brühl are of note (I ♥ them both incredibly), even if they're marginally unknown in the U.S. As is CANNES-WINNING Christoph Waltz. And they're all varyingly awesome in it (and, like, Waltz will probably get nominated). Also Mélanie Laurent and her prettiness (yay breakthrough!). The cinematography, production design, costumes, editing and sound work are all superb, as well. And it's probably my new #1 for the year.

(Kruger was surprisingly adequate?)

i want to see it but i'm not dying to see it like past QT projects that's come out. i will see it but eh ... whenever man. oh i think one of the guys from The Office is in it.

and agreed Eli Roth is annoying.

Fletch, our trend continues...I actually can't wait to see Post Grad. The trailer during a movie I saw recently made it look pretty funny. I'll see that, you see IB and we'll have it all covered.

With low expectations like that, I think you will be impressed by it if you see it. Christoph Waltz is amazing in it, and Diane Kruger actually has a good performance.
The movie really doesn't just revolve around torturing Nazis the whole time either.

Eli Roth is annoying in his one big scene. Otherwise, he's fine.

Nobody should be judged by their work in National Treasure alone. Dianne Kruger is great.

Get your ass to this movie.

I feel pretty much the same about Basterds. I used to be so excited about QT's new films but, for some reason, I'm not this time but will probably end up seeing it anyway.

JD - so you're saying you liked it, then?

Jess - Insight Into Blog Entertainment Cabins?

Zach - yes, my lower expectations ought to guarantee my loving it. Funny how that seems to always works that way.

"The movie really doesn't just revolve around torturing Nazis the whole time either."

This is good to hear, too.

Paul - "Nobody should be judged by their work in National Treasure alone. Dianne Kruger is great."

I submit Troy.

"Get your ass to this movie."

What about Mars?

Yeah I'm definitely in for Basterds. The only thing that can keep me away is my busy schedule and my lack of desire to see it alone. Just gotta find a friend and find a time that works. . .

Everybody was awful in Troy. Low blow.

I loved it, of course I'm a huge fan of anything Tarantino, and this was some of his best work as far as I''m concerned. Sure maybe not a ton of substance, but I don't necessarily think it's required with the way he constructs his film. I'm thoroughly entertained and what more can I ask for. Christoph Waltz's performance alone was worth the price of admission, and like another person said above Kruger wasn't even a nightmare and she drives me bonkers.
