The definition of "Schadenfreude"

Boo! How'd you like to wake up with that picture in front of your eyes? I'd be asking for the sweet, sweet solace of death. Anyway, I'm not here to scare you with pictures of Nic Coppola, but rather to take joy in this news, from New Orleans' Times-Picayune:

"Actor Nicolas Cage may have more trouble selling his homes in New Orleans than most other people who have plunked for-sale signs in front of their houses.

That's because the Internal Revenue Service has placed a tax lien for $6.26 million on his properties for failing to pay income taxes in 2007. Another IRS lien for $360,545.84 stems from unpaid income taxes between 2002 and 2004.

The presence of the liens means that Cage must pay the debts before he can sell or refinance his properties, or the proceeds will be taken out at closing. The IRS can attach liens after it notifies a taxpayer about unpaid taxes, and the taxpayer neglects or refuses to pay the debt in 10 days.

Cage, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, owns two houses in New Orleans. He put both of them on the market this spring."

The story later goes on to say that "Cage has had a string of unsuccessful movies in recent years, including Knowing, Bangkok Dangerous, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Ghost Rider and Grindhouse."

Jesus, Times-Picayune, even I, one of the leading Cage haters on the internets, would be hard-pressed to classify the nearly-half-a-billion-worldwide grossing Book of Secrets and the $200 million worldwide grossing Ghost Rider as "unsuccessful." Give the guy a break, will ya?

"Grindhouse"? Really? The couldn't have gone with "Wicker Man"?

Good point, Joel. Aside from being a critical success, it's not as though Cage is responsible AT ALL for Grindhouse's performance in any facet. He had a cameo in it, for chrissakes!

I think that you should stop fighting your urges Fletch. Let's face it, you have a man crush on me. Why else would you search the web for every shred of info about me? Heck, you even use my gigantic charismatic face as your thumbnail photograph!

It's ok though, you can remain my closet fan if you like.

Oh and the National Treasure flicks are going to be the new Friday the 13th movies...there are tons of historic locations that can hide large quantities of gold...I hope.

Nic Cage was the bomb in Adaptation!

Wow... Fletch sticking up for Nic Cage.

To say that Nic Cage has had a string of unsuccessful movies would preclude the fact that he had a string of successful ones. Wasn't National Treasure his biggest grosser? Bigger than Next anyways.

Hi! Fletch,
Omg! actor Nicholas Cage?!?...Is that really you?...I was going to say that your "head" is really "big" on my widget, but if that is "really" you...your head just fit on my widget.
Bye!
DeeDee ;-D

Nicholas Cage...by the way, I really liked your performance in
GhostRider and the recently viewed film called Honeymoon in Vegas.

"Gigantic charismatic face"

Haha - I didn't know it was possible for a face to be charismatic, Nic, but I guess if anyone's capable of pulling that off, it's you.

What can I say? I'm smitten... ♥♥♥

At least the paper didn't say he had made "good films." We could debate the meaning of "successful/unsuccessful" all day long, but there's no doubting the fact that Cage makes crap on a regular basis.

You really like his performance in Ghost Rider, DeeDee? Seriously? Oh, who am I to talk - I surely haven't seen it. Is it yet another Academy snubbing for Nic?

I still think it is undeniable that "Adaptation." is a brilliant movie. It probably is and will remain to be the best of his career.

Fletch said...

Well, it's certainly between Adaptation and Raising Arizona. I could hear arguments for both.

JLG said...

Yeah Raising Arizona for sure.

I can't believe there's this much discussion on Nicholas "Magic Hairline" Cage.

C'mon, JLG - trashing - er, discussing - Cage is my favorite pasttime!
