TGITDNMAR (10/3/08)

It's that time again for TGITDNMAR, which (obviously) stands for Thank God It's The Day New Movies Are Released.

Has it really been four weeks since I last did a TGITDNMAR? It seems it has. I don't know what's to blame more - Cagefest, the quality of films released in the past month, or my lack of discipline.

Oh wait, I just got my answer. Arnold Schwarzenegger just called me and said, "You lack discipline!" Thanks, 'nator.

Anyway, tons of new releases this week. I swear IMDb lists about 14 movies coming out this week, ranging from wide to indie to uber-limited (NY only). I've narrowed it down to the handful you see here. Looks like we might be heading to the theater more this month than the last two combined, judging by this first weekend.

Appaloosa
Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen each in badass mode, layin' down the law, Tombstone-style as a pair of lawmen come to hlep out a struggling town? Yes, please. I'll even overlook the fact that Shrivelface (Zellweger) co-stars. Couldn't they have just found the gal that played Kilmer's lover in Tombstone to play her role? That would have added at least 15% to the total you see below...

How To Lose Friends & Alienate People
Has the sequel to last month's Ghost Town already been made? Normally funny British actor stars (Gervais, Pegg) in what looks to be a crappy comedy with respected male actor (Kinnear, Bridges) and respected female actress (Leoni, Dunst). Yep, same thing. Unfortunately, in all cases, the actors seem to be waaaay better than their material. Then again, seeing Jeff Bridges with the weirdest looking hair since Cage in BangDang and Hanks in DaVince Code just might be worth it.

Blindness
Like the posters. Like the concept. Like the cast, though I find it jarring whenever Danny Glover shows up in a serious role these days. IMDb lists him at 62 years of age, but wasn't he bitching about being too old for this sh*t 20 years ago? I keep expecting him to be 85 years old already. And shoot me - I still have yet to see any of Fernando Mureallylonglastname's films (City of God, City of Men, The Constant Gardener), but I'm planning on doing so eventually.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua
Where to start? I'm not Hispanic, but I feel offended-by-proxy way too more than I probably should. What's next? I have to believe that Song of the South looks pale in comparison to this. Is the phonetic spelling of the word "chihuahua" really necessary these days? Is there anyone over the age of five that doesn't know how to say that word? Oh wait - this movie is made for five year olds...
Fletch's Chance of Viewing: ¡Ay ay ay, no me gusta!

Religulous
Outside of Benjamin Button, this is the movie I've been waiting for see for months. Unfortunately, there's been so little press about it, I didn't even know it was being released today until I saw the ad in the New Times for it. Suffice it to say, Mrs. Fletch and I will be there tonight to see it, then head home to watch Maher's (and his panel's) take on last night's debate on Real Time. Should be an excellent night.

Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist
Does having the term "playlist" in the title solidify this as the first "Web 2.0" movie? Though I'm sure I'll see this (love Cera), I'm slightly off put by this turn of events. I'm not ready for a movie called Podtastic! Or iMovie. Or Googleplex. Make it stop before it really starts...please.

So yeah... I'm totally psyched about this weekend. I'm halfway through the book version of "Blindness" now and will hopefully check it out tomorrow. I've been excited for this movie since I saw the first trailer for it months ago. As for the director, I've seen (and own, due to a bargain sale) The Constant Gardener, though I thought it was vastly overrated.

I'm also very excited for How To Lose Friends & Alienate People, mostly because it has Simon Pegg, as well as Megan Fox wet and half naked a lot. And then Nick and Nora, of course, because Michael Cera is hilarious and the main girl is hot (and is a good actress)... but mainly because she's hot.

I knew there was something sinister behind The LAMB. It had that cultish status hanging over it but I could never pinpoint it. Now it all makes sense.

I wish I liked Bill Maher as much as he liked himself.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist looks good. Really good. But not like Juno good which was not good at all. Like sincerely good.

Michael Cera and Kat Dennings make a cute couple. I heard he bought her a wedding ring... tone.

I suck. I haven't seen a movie in a theater since... I think Clone Wars. And that's reason enough to get off of movies.

But Nick and Nora are a couple of people I would like to hang out with for an evening.
