Burning Questions - Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Midway through Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Ferris, Sloane and Cameron go to Chez Quis, a snooty French restaurant that came complete with a snooty maitre d'. Faced with the possibility of being shut down and out of a table, Ferris quickly scanned the reservation list and took the reservation of "Froman - 3" as their own, leading to an excellent sequence in which he fakes a call to the cops as part of the ruse. They get their table.

But what happened to the Sausage King of Chicago that day? It's not as though Ferris was looking at a list of cancelled reservations - were he, the suspicions of the maitre d' would have been raised even further. As it was, Ferris and gang had to have spent at least an hour at Chez Quis; at a restaurant like that, I'm sure there were multiple courses to be had and lengthy waits in between.

So did Abe (and his unknown guests) just never show up? If so, why not? Was the Froman party in a car crash, or perhaps was Abe the one that was truly ill that day? If they did show up, surely all Abe would have needed to do was show his ID (though a man known as "the Sausage King" would likely be offended to even be asked such a thing) to end Ferris' game and get the high schoolers kicked out of the restaurant.

I wonder what a difference that would have made in the snooty maitre d's life...

So I ask you - what happened to Abe?

This is what snooty film snobs like to point out as a 'plot hole'. :P

Also, why would the sausage king of Chicago be dining at such a fine restaurant? Surely, his tastes are of a simpler nature.

Perhaps Abe was attending a last minute fundraiser to Save Ferris.

The same thing that happened to those couple of imperial officers that realized there were no life forms on the Tantive IV scape pod: The Force was just too strong.

Is this a new feature?

Love it.

Damn straight, Nick. :)

Mike, I'm thinking Abe was attending the parade downtown. He seems like that kinda guy.

Wampa, that's why you're the best.

Not sure, Daniel. And even if it is, I didn't want to say so; I have a bad habit of celebrating new features and then eventually letting them fade away.

I love sausage. And this post. And FERRIS BUELLER.

There was no sequel because Ferris was made into sausage and never made it to college...
or he worked for Abe in "The Freshman"

This is probably the best post you've written since, oh, your last Survivor recap. (TWO MORE DAYS!!!)

"Ferris" is probably my favoritest movie of my youth (At least it is of all the movies I can think of at the moment, sorry "Goonies".) But sometimes unexplained plot holes are, just, funny.

You gonna do Survivor recaps again, Robb? I'm unsure...

Thanks!

Nah, nah, nah. One of the best things about that movie is how thought out and layered the jokes are. Pay close attention to the scene at the end of the restaurant, when Ferris & gang are trying to get into the cab, Ferris' dad is talking to one of his clients. I believe he says something like, "C'mon Abe... (Bonehead)."

I always took it that his dad was dining with Abe Froman.

Mark, you rock. And I stink. I pride myself on being a pretty observant dude, but I've somehow never caught that despite tens of viewings. Can't wait to check out that scene on the next one.
