It's that time again for TGITDNMAR, which (obviously) stands for Thank God It's The Day New Movies Are Released.
This is going to be really short, since, if you know me at all, these are all really obvious. Also, I'm incredibly lazy and have tickets to see one of these movies at 3:45 today. Guess which one! WInner gets a prize!
The Dark Knight
For whatever reason, I'm not nearly as psyched about this as I probably should be, and I'm not sure why. I mean, short of Indiana Jones, this was probably my most anticipated film of the summer, but I'm not finding myself geeking out. Maybe it's because I've tried hard to avoid learning much of anything about it, or maybe it's because I'm 31. I'll go with the former.
Fletch's Chance of Viewing (in the theater): 666%
Mamma Mia!
I'm seeing this as a double feature along with the Sex and the City movie. Then I'm killing myself. It's gonna be great.
Fletch's Chance of Viewing: 0%
Space Chimps
I don't know about you, but I'm holding out for Fly Me to the Moon.
Fletch's Chance of Viewing: 0%
12 people have chosen wisely: on "TGITDNMAR (7/18/08)"
Fletch, my dear, you have to be somewhat psyched... we bought advance tickets for today's show at 3:00. And you're leaving work early to be there. We never do that!
Fletch and Mrs. Fletch are going early? I'm so envious!
I booked my tickets this week so I just have to pick them up at will call, that way I don't have to worry about the theater being oversold (which has now happened to me more times than I can count). We're going to be leaving way early for the movie too (although I'm not leaving work early, lucky Fletch!)
I think The Dark Knight is re-inspiring people about how fun the actual process of going to highly anticipated movies is for the general public, which is something you don't really seem to see much of anymore. The last "big" movie where I could remember this many people chattering about it and buying tickets way in advance was probably Titanic, which was what? 11 years ago?
@ Mrs. Fletch - true. I really have to refute to that. Hi.
@ Caitlin - before Wampa (or any number of other geeks) comes in here and smashes you upside the head, I have two words for you: Phantom Menace.
Piper wrote about how he likes lines a few weeks back - I'm sure he agrees with you. I like the excitement, but not the lines. :)
The last movie I was this psyched about was the 4th HP (I don't know why not the 5th). I had to "work" all day, which consisted of me sitting at my desk looking up people's reviews for 9 straight hours, being tortured until the 11:00 clock show that night. It was painful (the anticipation, not the movie:).
I have no idea why I haven't felt that pysched since...till now.
Yeah... I was going to respond to caitlin with a certain set of movies, but rachel brought it up first. Pretty much every Harry Potter movie is huge (it HAS become the biggest selling franchise in the world... even surpassing Star Wars and James Bond).
I also remember The Passion of the Christ being much like Titanic, in which you could hardly ever get a ticket due to being constantly sold out.
Do ya THINK I'm an ABBA fan? I'm telling you, Mamma Mia! is tolerable, if for no other reason than the fact that it makes fun of itself for you.
I blew off sleep for a midnight showing of the DARK KNIGHT. We only got tickets 6 hours before the showing and they were almost sold out (7 theatres)
I couldn't believe how packed it was. Then, I saw the movie, and understood why.
GREAT,GREAT PICTURE.
To be honest, I am actually interested in seeing Space Chimps. I am, for reasons unbeknownst to myself, greatly amused by Andy Samberg(samburg?) and interested mainly only for his involvement.
Bought my tickets a month ago for the midnight IMAX premiere. Came home, blogged about it, got a few hours sleep and went to the first show at 10 AM.
Red Sox in town last night, worked tonight, going Sunday morning before work instead of church and then probably once more on Monday.
That starts my week again.
I didn't want to see this film for several reasons:
1). I was so use to the original joker role and thought it couldn't be perfected but oh how wrong that I was. Ledger's role lives up to all the hype and then some. I'm not sure if he deserves an Oscar for it but I wouldn't be upset if he did get one posthumously.
2). I'm afraid of clowns but I found the Joker in the Dark Knight to be fascinating more than terrifying. I related to him a little too much I think because if I was to go all psychotic then I think I'd be a lot like him.
Bottom line is that I really enjoyed it and like you I didn't expect much, which helped me enjoy it.
I will say though that if it wasn't for Ledger the movie wouldn't be that great. I thought Bale was better in Batman Begins than TDK.
@ Dead Pan - I'm sorry that you're looking forward to Space Chimps. On the other hand, enjoy the empty theater.
@ Mike - how many times do you plan on seeing TDK? We'll probably go again in a few days, once the crowds die out a bit...
@ Mr. Wonderful - 1. I agree. 2. Please don't go Joker on us any time soon. Thanks. ;)
I thought Bale didn't have as much to do this time around, and it seemed he was Batman more than Bruce this time, which obviously gives him little acting range. Still, I didn't think he did bad or anything - the Joker/Ledger is just the star here.
Every time I see Bale as Bruce Wayne I keep thinking of him in AMERICAN PSYCHO and expect him to break out in a riff about the merits of Huey Lewis or Whitney Houston.
TDK was pretty amazing if only for Ledger's performance but also for Christopher Nolan's direction, which, at times, esp. with the opening bank heist scene, was Michael Mann-esque.
