The 12 Movies Meme

Friggin' Piper. With his fancy blog-a-thons and memes. Now guess what he's gone and done? He tagged me with a meme. And even crazier? I've accepted the tagging - he should be honored - I've avoided memes for over 18 months (though, really, there's not much difference between a meme and a blog-a-thon, and it's not like I'm scared of those).

Anyway, this one, as you might have figured from the title, is called The 12 Movies Meme. The idea, from the clown's mouth himself, was pulled from a post he read over at Strange Culture that asks if YOU could pick 12 movies to run at the New Beverly Cinema (or really any theater), which ones would they be?

"Your 12 movies should be like a good mixed tape. Strong at first, brought down a little right after, then up again, solid in the middle with a big finish.

So here are the Meme rules:

1) Choose 12 Films to be featured. They could be random selections or part of a greater theme. Whatever you want.

2) Explain why you chose the films.

3) Link back to Lazy Eye Theatre so I can have hundreds of links and I can take those links and spread them all out on the bed and then roll around in them.

4) The people selected then have to turn around and select 5 more people."

Sounds easy enough, right? I've decided to turn mine into the "Vices Film Festival."

Night One - Smoking Sunday (starting slow)

Night Two - Mary Jane Monday (a gateway to even better films)

Night Three - Acid Tuesday (the long trip)

Night Four - no films scheduled. Time to recuperate.

Night Five - Cocaine Thursday (getting psyched for the weekend)

Night Six - Gambling Friday (Viva Las Vegas!)

Night Seven - Sexy Sunday (the final release)

Now, some of these (Smoke, Casino, etc) may seem like obvious choices - and they are - but the group of twelve also makes up a healthy chunk of my favorite films. It just so happens that they fit into these perfect compartments. Lucky me and my vice-loving movies. As for the selection of Go for Sexy Sunday - yes, it does have sex in it, but more importantly, it really ties the week together, featuring just about all of the vices contained on the previous days.

Time for the fun part - tagging others (note: I'm only tagging people that I think might be interested in this to begin with, and I only get five):

I don't know whether to be flattered or annoyed. Mine will be up on Monday.

Not really sure what the premise was...

I like the concept of watching movies on drugs and your drug/vice schedule for the week is top notch, I even liked the choices right up until Casino, that movies not about gambling, its more about desperately trying to be Goodfellas, you would have been better off slipping in Rounders and dealing with the "Bill Simpson" wannabe criticism, also I've never seen Go but the Sex day was screaming for a porno... (I'd say throw in "a girl next door" for Cuthberts scorching sexiness but that ugly Speed Racer kills the movie... tragedy, I was even available when that movie was being shot too...)

I think having a Vices Film Festival is an inpsired idea, and you have a great lineup there. I could nitpick some choices I suppose (How can you have Mary Jane Monday without Cheech and Chong?) but overall, I think I'd show up for several nights of this festival. I'd definitely show up for "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" which I think is a bit undderrated.

@ Mike - it's not like you have to do it. Be flattered, damnit! I ch-ch-chose you.

@ Gay - what don't you get about the premise? You get to program a theater for a week: 12 films spread out over 6 days. Anything you want - it's like a mixtape.

In my book, which I read by myself, Casino >> GoodFellas. I've covered this ground many a time - I know there are a few that agree, but not many. Though Rounders was in my head as a possibility, if that makes you feel any better. Were it 3 films a night, it would've made the cut.

How about The Bare Wench Project in lieu of a straight porno?

@ Pat - thanks. I don't dislike Cheech and Chong, but Dazed and Half Baked speak to me more. If one had to go, Half Baked could be subbed out for a little C & C, though.

I'll say this for Fear and Loathing - it's not the most accessible of flicks. If you haven't read the book, there's a good chance you have no idea what's going on (and possibly still even if you have read it). But I love it. Great adaptation, and I could stand to re-read the book.

I think of Go as more of a Vegas movie than Swingers. But then, I hated Swingers.

Fletch, on each night you screen a movie, you should provide audiences members with the vice that is on the marquee for the night.

Um... not sure how the "sexy Sunday" would work, but...

Okay, typing it up right now! :D

I have a strange obsession with Boogie Nights...EVERY SINGLE TIME IT'S ON, I watch with rapt fascination.

Oddly enough, I always catch the middle of GO and that's it...One day, I will watch the whole thing.

Alrighty, I'm it. We'll see what I can come up with this weekend.

A lotta Vegas in these choices, Fletch. You a lover of Vegas?

I would be intrigued and a little scared of a Fear and Loathing and Alice in Wonderland night.

And oh shit, I love Smoke.

There! Mine have been posted. I have the best line-up EVER.

@ Fox - prostitutes for everyone on Sunday! Er, maybe not.

@ DC Girl, Nayana - looking forward to them. Also, DC Girl, want me to lend you my copy of Go? ;)

@ Piper - yes, I am, though THN (aka NFL Adam aka Mr. Booze) is the real connisseur of Sin City. Check out his Blogging Las Vegas site if you don't believe me (it's in the sidebar).

I'm a sucker for films set there, usually. I've even sat through minutes of Lucky You on a few occasions, and I'm sure I'll watch 21 when it hits HBO.

The F&L/Alice night might be my favorite. Talk about great movies to see on the big screen...

@ Nick - suuuuure ya do. :P

Interesting line up. Make me feel like I'm going to hell just by looking at the posters.

I need to see Smoke. That needs to happen!

I have to say, this was a really solid theme - and great choices. I wish Go would come on TV again at some point. I keep meaning to see it again but then I forget about it.
