Fletch's Film Review: Strange Wilderness

Rescue Dawn. Superbad. Supertroopers. God forbid - even Fletch?

What do these films have in common, you ask? Well, by virtue of having their stars or co-stars (Steve Zahn, Jonah Hill, Kevin Heffernan and Joe Don Baker, respectively) appearing in Strange Wildnerness, they all feel somewhat tainted to me now (lucky for Ernie Borgnine, The Single Guy was never good to begin with). I can confidently say that Strange Wilderness will be the worst movie I will see this year. I can only hope that you don't make the same mistake, or have already (Wayward Jam from Reel Whore already has, but his take is gentler than mine).

The truth is, the films of those that appear in Wilderness (this being a Happy Madison production, Adam Sandler vets Allen Covert and Peter Dante join the ride, as does Justin Long) aren't tainted, but the stars certainly are. I'd say they were selling out, but with the lo-fi, sad production values, I can't imagine the budget for this was much more than a couple hundred bucks. So what was the appeal? Sure, gathering a group of seemingly talented comedic actors would seem to be a recipe for gold, but, um, didn't anyone read the script? The writing makes the worst Saturday Night Live episode feel like Airplane!

To go into any further detail would be to give the movie more attention than it deserves, and more than the collective effort of those that participated. It would also be incomplete, as I wouldn't know how to end - we walked out halfway through.

As far back as I can recall, this is the first movie I've ever walked out on, and I've stayed through some clunkers (Epic Movie, The Big Hit). Avoid like the plague.

Fletch's Film Rating:

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"

(Note: History has been made. This is the first film to be solely awarded this rating in the year-long history of the Fletch Film Rating Scale. Southland Tales simultaneously received the best and worst ratings.)

We both enjoy some pretty "wrong" humor... but this movie was absolutely terrible.

Oh my god, I was just thinking about that yesterday, how I've never seen that rating used. And such a (presumably*) worthy candidate too!

* - I ain't goin' near this crapfest.

I watched the movie tonight, just haven't had the opportunity to post my review.

The movie is definitely stupid but I found myself laughing quite a bit. I guess it is the adolescent in me...

Wow... a walkout. I've never walked out of a movie (and probably never will, no matter how bad it is, for numerous personal reasons). I heard horrible reviews for the movie before it came out, too.

And I have yet to see Epic Movie. I was unfortunate enough to go see Date Movie, though, which was bad enough.

Thanks for the shout Fletch, um I think. :-) I can't believe you lump The Big Hit in with this!? You are talking 'bout the Wahlberg flick and not some other Big Hit i don't know of I assume?!

@Nick - I too suffered through Date Movie and therefore avoided Epic Movie like the plague!

@General Disdain - Glad I wasn't the only one who didn't find this abhorrent. It did have its moments, just very few and very far between.

Hmm....That stinks. I was semi looking forward to checking this out one day, as I like a lot of the people in it. Ah well, thanks for taking the bullet for me.

Adolescent humor is great. After walking out, we went to Blockbuster, and Superbad was amongst the purchase. But this was just not funny.

I think I gave a mild chuckle once or twice, but nothing near a laugh. I was pretty silent.

We walked out about halfway through, right after the turkey segment. Just a lame, lame movie. About the only thing it had going for it was the boobs, but even those seemed totally gratuitous. Also, any flick with Harry Hamlin is not one worth seeing. I could go on and on...

Wow, a walkout. I've pulled this several times but not for about 10 years. I guess I've refined my taste, though I probably could have been talked into going to this. Thanks for taking one for the team.
