A Life in Movies

[Note: this site is no longer publishing new content - please come check out my awesome new site, Man, I Love Films! http://manilovefilms.com. Thanks!]

That Fandango has done it again.

In other words, Andy over at Fandango Groovers Movie Blog has come up with another excellent community blogging event (it transcends blog-a-thon!) for us all to partake in. I would hope that you can tell from the banner what it's supposed to be, but here's the skinny from the horse's mouth:
Inception, Toy Story 3, Winter’s Bone, Sex and the City 2 - what was your favourite movie of 2010? That’s an easy question you probably know the answer without giving it a second thought. But what about your favourite from five years ago, or ten, or event the year you were born? Now that’s a little harder.

I am inviting fellow bloggers to tell us what their favourite movies are from each year of their life so far. You can put as much or as little effort into you list as you wish. It could just be a list of movies, you may with to add a sentence or two about the movies or what they mean to you, you can brighten it up with images, posters or trailers. The choice is yours.

So, below is my list. I went at this with the mindset: which were the movies that undoubtedly meant the most to me at that point in my life (if I even saw them that year) that STILL mean a lot to me. Sure, I might have loved Benji or The Black Stallion when I was a child, but I can't say that I've seen either in at least two decades.

Edit: I forgot to mention a component of this list - I've tried to make it a bit more fun than your typical list, in that it's somewhat of a guessing game as well. While many of the images you see below are bound to be iconic, others are either from less recognizable films or less iconic images from very well-known films. If you aren't sure what any of them are, just ask (or guess!)

Go here to check out everyone's lists.

1976The Bad News Bears
Perhaps this will change when I finally see Network.

1977Star Wars
Duh.

1978Animal House
I could really give or take this year.

1979The Jerk
This is when the choices start to get difficult for me.

1980The Empire Strikes Back
Duh.

1981Raiders of the Lost Ark
Duh.

1982Fast Times at Ridgemont High

1983National Lampoon's Vacation
Really should be Jedi, but we've had enough Star Wars.

1984The Karate Kid
What an iconic "80s" year for the movies.

1985Fletch
Had to be. 1985 is stacked with movies I adore (BTTF, Better Off Dead, Goonies, Teen Wolf).

1986Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Barely edges Top Gun.

1987The Princess Bride
Barely edges Predator. I couldn't not choose TPB.

1988Die Hard
With apologies to Coming to America and Bloodsport.

1989Batman
This might be the year I can point to and say "this is when I fell in love with movies."

1990Total Recall
Pretty easy choice, really.

1991Point Break
Yes, you read that right - over T2.

1992The Last of the Mohicans

1993True Romance
Makes up for not picking Reservoir Dogs in '92.

1994Pulp Fiction
Duh.

199512 Monkeys
With apologies to The Usual Suspects and Se7en. Tough year to choose from.

1996Fargo

1997Boogie Nights

1998Run Lola RUn
With apologies to The Big Lebowski and Rushmore. That hurt. A lot.

1999Fight Club
1999 is the greatest year in modern movie history. I heart it to death.

2000Memento

2001Amelie
Wes Anderson gets the shaft once again.

2002The Bourne Identity
Not a great year for movies, overall. A lot to like but not looooove.

2003Code 46
I'm its champion. Tops the superior Finding Nemo due to my constant flag-waving.

2004Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
No contest.

2005Batman Begins
Why do I feel bad about this choice?

2006The Departed
I'm shocked at how many 2006 flicks I've ended up loving. We'll look back fondly on it.

2007There Will Be BLood
I might've pick Hot Fuzz, but Point Break kinda covers it, don't ya think?

2008Wall*E
Can't believe I've still only seen this once.

2009Inglourious Basterds
Was having a hard time choosing until I got to "I." Then - game over.

2010Inception
We'll see what its staying power is like; I have a feeling it won't be this in five years…

2011Hanna
See it already! (Yeah, I cheated - this was only supposed to go through 2010.)

27 people have chosen wisely: on "A Life in Movies"

Nice choices, but I have really no idea what some of those 80's ones are...

You're right, 2002 was a pretty bad year for films, not many really amazing ones that year.

I'll be posting my list soon, it's much shorter than yours of course ;)
We only have one film in common, Pulp Fiction.

But I must say I really like Run Lola Run as well, such a brilliant film that really doesn't get mentioned enough!
So, I like this list.

Jess said...

Great list. We have a few that overlap, but I'm most surprised that one is WALL*E.

Fletch said...

@ Jack - In regards to you not recognizing some, I must thank you for the reminder. I meant to put in a note about my image selections and why they aren't (and aren't supposed to be) all that recognizable. See the edit to the post for the explanation. Anyway, we might have more in common than you think.

I love Lola so much. It's a brilliant film in so many ways, but mostly I love the variation of film techniques and how they correspond to what you're being shown.

@ Jess - Pretty sure Wall*E was my top film of 2008, so it shouldn't be all that surprising.

Ah Ferris *love*
We have Fight Club in common and yes what a year!!

You got yours up already! Mine goes live at midday. I like that you left it as a guessing game, and some great picks. Not many of ours cross over. You'll have to wait and see :P

Joel Burman said...

Actually Network is way overrated! I have not seen your pick for 1976 but I am sure it keeps up well with Network.

This is the list that is the biggest mystery to me a lot of titles I can't tell.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for joining in. great picks, I count nine that are on my own list, also love the twist on the concept.

Rich said...

Gotta disagree with Joel; 'Network' was far, far ahead of its time and if anything, it holds up even more today than when it came out.

Is 2000 'The Man Who Wasn't There'?

Joel Burman said...

Rich: When it comes to that kind of media critique I find The Truman Show to be a much greater film. Network is mostly about an old guy kickin and screamin but it was a while since I saw it.

Jack L said...

Seriously, call me ignorant but I just have no idea what the 7O's-80's ones are, except the three most obvious ones...
I get all the others though.

Kaiderman said...

Please include titles. Had to think waaaay too much on this. :)

Brittani Burnham said...

I like that you didn't include titles. It's fun to know a movie by just looking at the picture. Cool concept!

Alex said...

Dang I cannot guess all of these but I do like the concept! Maybe put the titles in alt text or something so we can check if our guesses are correct?

That image from Point Break is too adorable. I hope they stay together forever.

Also 2002 had Undercover Brother, so I'd say it was a pretty great year.

Rich said...

Joel, I can't tell if you're joking, but if you're not, I honestly think you're selling 'Network' short. It's much more than Howard Beale's story. By all means, give it another look and you'll see what I mean. 'Truman' is great too, but it's very much a descendent of 'Network.'

Superb list and great twist. The only one that had me stumped is 2004. I think I know the film but if I am recognising the actor right and matching up what he did in that year, I totally don't remember that visual element! I might be going crazy :P Either way, we share a lot of faves xx

hehe Great idea Fletch, if a little frustrating!!

I have most but am lost on a few...ah well, I never said I was a brainbox

Great job my friend

Nice list. I'm in the same crowd that, some of these I just don't know what they're supposed to be or never heard of them.

I wouldn't say Network is WAY overrated, but it is slightly overrated I think. I enjoyed it and all, just wasn't amazing like critics imply. That being said, I'd put Bad News Bears over it. Can't go wrong with Matthau.

The Jerk, another hilarious choice. I really like the inclusion of Vacation as well. Christmas Vacation is my favorite I think, but Vacation is a close second, and I just enjoy all the adventures of Clark Griswald.

Nice seeing Tarantino back-to-back there with True Romance and Pulp Fiction.

And don't feel bad, now that you mention it, I realize I've only watched Wall-E once as well. Not sure why.

I do think Inception will hold up pretty well. Sure it will lose something, but looking back in 5 years, it will still be one of my favorites of 2010.

Eric said...

I really dig your twist on this blogathon. I am sad to say that I only recognized about half of your selections though. The inclusion of The Jerk is a nice surprise.

Fletch said...

TO ALL THAT COULDN'T GUESS ALL OF MY CHOICES: Alex gave an awesome idea! I've added the film's titles in the alt text so you can check them that way if you so desire.

Kinda hard to respond to everyone in turn as several comments overlap.

I guess I'll just have to bump Network further up my queue so I can form an opinion on the matter!

Thanks to everyone for checking it out, and of course, thanks again to Andy for hosting another terrific blog-a-thon. I'll be checking out every last one of them today.

Wow, I just spent half an hour figuring out what the movies were. Such a cool way to do it.

Colleen said...

I liked your list because it was also like a fun puzzle. I know I didn't get them all though so you'll have to post an answer key!

Fletch said...

@ Dan - Thanks! I had fun putting it together. Didn't mean to make some of them so hard, I just tried to put in something I loved about each flick.

@ Colleen - If you hover over the pics, it should give you a little box with the name of the film. Though I might just put up a list in the next couple days anyway. :)

Caz said...

Some brilliant choices on your list! I've only seen Wall-E once as well and it left such a lasting impression with me!

"Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!"

Classic. I wish I'd been alive that year so that I could have included "Animal House" in my list.
