The new phone books comment system is here! The new phone books comment system is here!

Long have the masses - bloggers and non-bloggers alike - decried the Blogger commenting system. No nested replies! Evil Captcha codes! Other stuff!

Well, they won't be saying that about Blog Cabins any longer. They might come up with issues about Disqus to mention, but at least they'll be new.

I think I first saw the Disqus system on a Blogger blog over at Fitz's Nevermind Popular Film. It seemed sharp, glitch-free, combining the best elements of Blogger's and Wordpress' commenting system. So I signed up for an account some months ago. Tossed around the idea of implementing for a while, and finally decided to jump ship to Disqus today. Turns out, the implementation and integration couldn't be easier. It took awhile to import all of the existing comments, but there were nearly 10,000 spanning 4+ years, so that's to be expected. If you're on Blogger and are thinking that Disqus looks pretty cool, I highly recommend making the jump. Perhaps Fitz can offer additional insight, having had it for some time now.

So, to recap: no Captcha, nested threads, a groovy widget that now sits atop the right sidebar, and you can login with any number of profiles that you may have, from Disqus' own to Facebook to Yahoo Blogger to Wordpress (use the Open ID for the latter two and any others that OpenID supports - see the bottom of this page to see a list).

P.S. - I just learned that I can reply to comments directly from my email - meaning, just hit reply and start typing. This is the coolest thing ever - I'll even be able to respond to comments from my p.o.s. mentally-challenged smart phone - sweet!

Whoa, this is pretty cool! And you didn't have to leave Blogger to add this on? Very cool. I will look into this.

oooo

how exiciting

Nope - you don't have to leave at all. Have to monkey with some settings within
Blogger and do the import/sync of comments with Disqus, but that's about it.

If you want, ask me in a week what I'm thinking about it. I should know for
sure if I love it or not by then.

K, so, I hopped on the bandwagon, and added it to my site, but the widget isn't showing up. Help!

No. Its just not showing up.

Wait, cancel that. Works now.

Best I can do: http://docs.disqus.com/help/50/

Did you install the additional single line of code in a separate widget? That's
about the only other thing I can think of.

Fletch said...

I saw that! Cool. I was wondering - are your sidebars too narrow for it?

It's about time. I hate the blogger comment setup and it's a huge part of why I haven't been commenting on a lot of people's blogs.

Lame. I hate it. I'm never visiting this site again. You're so pretentious.

... shit, I forgot to hit 'Anonymous'.

You got that right - I can't stand the Blogger comment system. I have to pose a whole other person just to leave a comment. Good riddance I say!

I'll ask what you think next week. One problem - I attempted to subscribe to this post's comments and even did the confirm thing like wordpress uses, but I didn't get an e-mail of any of these comments. Did I do something or did it?

Fletch said...

Which person do you pose as, Steve? ;)

This is...this is...this is...boooooring. Deleeete.

Sorry, just had to use a Scott Pilgrim quote there. I love this little device! If I can be bothered, I may stick it on my site.

On another note, and this may sound really silly to all the techno-experts, but how do you get the little slideshow thingy on your page? Like I have looked everywhere for something which makes them, but I just haven't had luck!
