I came, I saw, I...conquered? (Oh, and I'm famous*)

Long-time Dwellers might recall that a few years ago, a couple of friends of mine (commenters Nic Cage and Buffett35, actually) and I drove out to California to test/audition for the old (and short-lived) VH1 game show The World Series of Pop Culture. (Read more about our wacky exploits here.)

Well, another opportunity presented itself, so I dove right in.

Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? is on the road again, holding auditions for any and all interested parties. They scheduled three stops for July, and more are expected in the fall sometime.

The first stop was yesterday in Las Vegas. Being just a hop, skip and a jump away from Phoenix, and with them not only testing for the regular show but for NETFLIX MOVIE WEEK, I had to go, and go I did, for a wham-bam 24-hour trip that included my getting up (unnecessarily) at 4:00am, waiting in lines for hours, and generally seeing loads of colorful people.

The bad news is that I somehow (!) did not pass the regular test; however, I did pass the Movie Week test (you damn right) and had the chance to interview with one of their producers. Sadly, the interview was over in about the time it takes to take a piss, but I still have a shot at being placed in the pool (of contestants, not urine). I'll receive a Yay or Nay postcard in the mail within 2-3 weeks. Wish me luck...(again).

By the way, if you're in Cleveland or Seattle, they'll be in those cities later this week (Cle. tomorrow). Go here for the full details.

* As mentioned in the title, I'm famous. Yes, I received another 1.2 seconds of fame as a part of this ordeal. The local ABC affiliate was on hand (KTNV) to document the proceedings for a piece, and - yes - I managed to get on screen for a split-second or two. Seeeeeeee?

(Click to enlarge. Yeah, it's grainy - trust me, that's me.)

If you'd like to watch the entire segment, go here (it's less than two minutes).

This is very exciting! Good luck! (and I'm not just saying that because you asked us to)

Just can't fight that kind of free publicity. Next time you should wear a Blog Cabins or LAMB T-Shirt :P.

Remember me when you need to phone a friend :P .

I had so much fun on that trip. I hope you make it through to the show.

Good luck, Fletcher. At least you got an ounce of fame. I spent all day on the set of the first Spiderman film and got blacked out by shadows!

Whoa, thanks for inviting me, I mean granted I would have destroyed the curve, but still a courtesy invite would have been nice...

BTW Fletch, I was thinking about doing some kind of banner for the LAMB who wins the most movie quizzes of the year.

Fletch said...

Alex - thanks! And thanks even more for the clarification. ;)

Univarn - you know what? I mentioned wearing a LAMB t-shirt to Mrs. Fletch, but she poo-pooed it. Of course, I don't actually have one currently, but one could certainly be made. I think that would've made me stand out even more than my brightly colored polo shirt did...

Nick - no more phone-a-friend on the show. Now it's "Ask an Expert."

Nic - you damn right it was fun, even more so since I beat you and Buffett on the test! :P

Kai - weak! Well, at least you got to see some cool shit happen, right?

KV - I was gonna call you to see if you wanted to meet up for drinks, but it was a less-than-24 hour trip, and much of my free time came midday Monday, so I was doubtful you'd be able to meet me. Didn't even think you'd want to take the test, though maybe I shoulda had you do the interview for me...

Anyway, I'll be back Labor Day for a longer trip. Drinks and blackjack!

Fletch said...

Oh, and Fitz - that is an excellent idea.

Good luck,

Just hope they don’t ask too many questions on old or classic movies!

Fletch said...

Andy - I already took the test(s)! And passed the movie one.

Unless you mean "good luck on the show," in which case a) there's probably a pretty small chance that I'll ever get on and b) if I ever do, I'll be making a much, much, much bigger deal out of it. EVERYONE will know. :D

Yes the “good luck” was referring to getting picked for the show.

So is it actually a movie version of the show? We don’t get that here, just the regular show.

Fletch said...

Well, then thank you, sir!

Yep, it's an 'all movie questions' version of the show. There are many a clip on YouTube (search: millionaire movie week) if you want to check out the difficulty of the questions...

Good luck. That's really cool. I didn't know about the "all movie questions" version. No more "phone a friend"? I feel so old, suddenly.
