TGITDNMAR (2/26/10)

It's that time again for TGITDNMAR, which (obviously) stands for Thank God It's The Day New Movies Are Released.

Cop Out
I was dead set against seeing this Kevin Smith-directed buddy cop comedy (OMG, you didn't know that he was directing? WTF is wrong with you? After all, it's apparently totally not being hyped as a Kevin Smith Joint, yet I don't know anyone that doesn't know that Smith directed it.). Then I read this review from the New Times, a publication I usually give much credence to in terms of their movie reviews, which almost paints its loving hommidge [sic] to cop movies of the past as Hot Fuzz-y. So now I'm torn. I'm still thinking "avoid theater, TV will suffice," but I suppose I'll leave largely up to the hordes on this one; if the general impression is good, I may give it a shot.

The Crazies
Get the f*ck outta here - a remake of a horror film! I don't believe it for one second. I like Timothy Olypant as much as the next guy, but I just have zero interest here. And even if I did, this was directed by Breck Eisner, he of Sahara fame, and I was under the impression that that flick was supposed to kill his career despite the slight strain of nepotism that may be going on here.

So far, The Crazies has been getting some pretty good reviews, believe it or not. Most horror remakes are terrible, but this one's supposed to be pretty good. In fact, the only real negative reviews I've read are from those who are super-fans of the original (and there aren't many).

I actually just got back from seeing The Crazies and my God was it good. Usually I'm with you on the "OMG a horror remake how original (not)" but I really enjoyed this one. The movie is really intelligent...a shocker for a horror movie...and is well done, well edited, extremely well acted and not a total gore fest. Overall I walked out going WHAAAAAA???!! I saw a good horror movie and a remake at that???!!

But sadly I will probably end up seeing Cop Out tomorrow sadly. Still the Crazies was pretty damn good.

Yeah, it's funny. After finishing this up, I went over to RT and saw that Cop Out was at 20%, while Crazies was at 70%. In other words, just about the opposite of what'd I'd heard and what I'd thought thus far. Nice to hear that Olyphant isn't involved in another p.o.s., but I still can't say I'm terribly interested, but if I hear enough good things, perhaps...

Travis: Awesome! I'm glad to hear it's great. I'm gonna go see it in a couple hours.

Yeah i just checked RT and thought that was pretty funny. My review is up now but I dunno if it's for everyone. I, myself enjoy a good horror movie but The Crazies as good as I think it is, is still a horror movie at it's core and that doesn't always appeal to everyone.

The original is good if you ever get the chance. It's a classic Romero film and one of his few good non zombie movies (they aren't zombies).

I agree after seeing TO in so many crap movies I was glad to see him in something good and hopefully he can continue that trend.

As for Cop Out...ah....ah....ahh... I really want to like it. I like Kevin Smith a lot and I love Willis and Scott but Morgan/Jordan (is there a difference really?) just kills it for me. He has such bad comedic timing for me and he annoys me so much. But you never know he could surprise me...I'm not betting on it though.

Dude, seriously, go see "Cop Out". It's fuckin' hilarious! I promise you it's a great movie. It's a black comedy buddy cop movie thing. It's great!

I'm not sure I can trust Jason when he says a movie is good :P .

i have just been told by a semi reliable source that both movies are pretty good in their own right.

Cop Out i had figured for renting has it has been bumped to tuesday's date nite and The Crazies which I figured for maybe catching on HBO has made the netflick Queue. with winter carrying on with the all the dreary i think i need the laughs before i need to see Tim Olaphant take on another Sherriff role. Crazies, Deadwood, and now some new series on TNT. he's a sherriff in each one.

Jason - uh, see Nick's comment. :D

wiec? - Please report back. Thus far, I've heard more good things about The Crazies than Cop Out (Jason notwithstanding).

Also, please start referring to him as Sheriff Timothy Olyphant, as though he were a Sir or Duke or Earl or something. It'll make the inevitability of his future jobs a smoother transition.
