TGITDNMAR (1/4/08)

It's that time again for TGITDNMAR, which (obviously) stands for Thank God It's The Day New Movies Are Released.

...Or, "Why don't you just not go to the movies this week?" That's apparently the message Hollywood is sending you loud and clear. With just two new releases (one of them limited, at that), it's either skip the movies or catch up on all the awards contenders. I recommend the latter strategy, specifically The Savages, which I've seen but have yet to review, There Will Be Blood, which I've not seen but will be doing shortly, or Juno, which you've probably read too much about already.

One Missed Call
Whither Ed Burns? Once touched by the golden hands of both Spielberg and Redford (get your mind out of the gutter), the Brother McMullen seems to have fallen on hard times. He's still directing, though (sorry Ed) I haven't seem a single one of his movies since She's the One. And he's still an appealing actor (Confidence was a pritty, pritty good heist flick) - so what's the deal? Bad luck, or am I just one of the few that likes the guy? I didn't even know he was in this, to be honest.

Oh, and in case you didn't know this already, that is hands down the creepiest poster of all time. Such a simple effect, but so well used. Unfortunately, it seems that it's the only selling point of the movie. But if you enjoy the work on the poster, check out this site, which went crazy with the mouth-for-eyes concept. Some are good, some not so much, and overall they aren't as creepy because it's almost always the same mouth (you'll see what I mean). My favorite has to be Hulk Hogan...
Fletch's Chance of Viewing (in the theater): 3%

The Killing of John Lennon
When I saw the title for this, my first thought was "Didn't that come out just like a year ago?" My mistake - that was The U.S. vs. John Lennon, a documentary about his life as an activist. This one? A drama starring a bunch of no-names and who-dats about his death. Meh. I'd rather see the doc. Or Across the Universe.
Fletch's Chance of Viewing: 7%

Not very promising, is it? As for me, I'll be doing my best to catch There Will Be Blood.

Juno is coming out to my theater this week, so I'm gonna go see that in a little bit. And then I should have my review up later today after I get home sometime.

JD - what are the odds that you end up hating it? I say even money; if it's not the best movie ever (weather forecast: not likely), I fear it's been built up a bit too much.

Can't wait to see your post about it. You're either gonna be REALLY happy or REALLY pissed, me thinks.

One Missed Call... nah.

The other one looks promising though, might give that a gander.
