Poll results; new poll

The results of the last poll have left me with a bit of a quandry: continue to let the testostcerone fly (even though I was unaware that I was doing so) and play to my overwhelmingly male demographic, or make an appeal to the ladies (what, the Dudes tournament wasn't enough beefcake for you?) to get those percentages at least more in line with the numbers I've observed as being normal in the movie blogging community (70/30)?

Oh, such a conundrum. Perhaps I'll just stick to the same old same old and try to market myself better to the women out there. And perhaps also attempt to push my theory that women are just wary of blog polls, since I know damn well there are more than five women that read this blog at least semi-regularly. Of course, there are also more than 26 guys, so maybe it's accurate after all. Time to do some market research...

New poll wants to know how you get the news (aka blog posts) delivered to you. Let me know if I missed a method. I'm a hybrid (I start with a feed reader and proceed to the direct site to comment, mostly) and would imagine many others are as well, but try to answer with the most common case (in which case my answer will be "feed reader").
And then...

Ladies of the 80s Tournament - Round 3: Demi Moore (1) vs Mia Sara (2)

Previous results: In what I believe was the most voted on matchup yet, Molly Ringwald (that's Princess of the 80s to you, buddy) took down one of the 90s princesses, Jennifer Connelly, 31-19. Molly's lucky her matchup wasn't today - don't know how well she'd have done on Ignore a Ginger Day. Click here to view the updated full bracket.

Demi Moore

80s Highlights: Blame It on Rio, St. Elmo's Fire, About Last Night, One Crazy Summer, We're No Angels

Mia Sara

80s Highlights: Legend, Ferris Bueller's Day Off

And then...

Dudes of the 80s Tournament - Round 3: John Cusack (3) vs Michael J. Fox (5)

Previous results: 19-18. #1 seed Row Lowe had his hands full with Eddie Murphy, but had just enough support to squeeze by. Had the voting lasted a few hours more, this might've tipped the other way. Click here to view the updated full bracket.

Say what you must about the outcomes of some of the matchups (Lowe winning = racist? C'mon - he won by a single vote, and was a top seed!), but I think we ended up with some really potentially great ones in the final rounds. Today's battle of the underdogs (Fox has taken down Superman and John Depp - can he continue his run with Cusack?), an upcoming Maverick-Iceman game, a bad boy battle with Lowe and Downey, Jr. and a Red Dawn reunion with Sheen against the Swayze. Really looking forward to next week and beyond.

John Cusack

80s Highlights: Sixteen Candles, Better Off Dead, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, One Crazy Summer, Eight Men Out, Say Anything

Michael J. Fox

80s Highlights: Teen Wolf, Back to the Future (1 & 2), Bright Lights, Big City, The Secret of My Success

Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains Episode 11 Recap/Live Blog

I'm one of those people that hate what I call peoples' tendency towards "Instant History," in which everything that's most recent must be the best, worst, whatever extreme works into the discussion of the day. A playoff basketball game will come and go and be called "the most intense game ever!" A movie list declaring the best of a decade will be heavy with flicks from just the past three years. People have short memories, and hyperbole runs wild.

Well, I've just said all that, so you know it's time for me to contradict myself (at least kind of). I won't go so far as to say that this is "OMGZERS the best season eva!!," but it has to be in the conversation, doesn't it? Then again, I actually do have a terrible memory about things like this, so I could say that it's the best season in recent memory and I wouldn't be exaggerating at all.

How will they keep the drama going tonight?

7:00: Shocker of all shockers - Russell is pissed that he wasn't the driving force in the events of the previous Tribal Council. I am Jack's Complete Lack of Surprise.

7:01: The downside of Rupert (finally) being right about something? Having to hear him say "I told you so." Thank god I'm not there on the island; I can only imagine how unbearable he'd be about that. Then again, the people out there with him actually deserve to hear it - we're just innocent bystanders.

7:05: Survivor Shuffle? Sweet - I've been dying to learn a new dance. Oh...nevermind, it's just shuffleboard. Shame on CBS for not really going with what's hot and having Survivor Curling. That'd truly be sweet.

7:08: Nice shot by Selleck!

(That's my nickname for Danielle's mustache - should you have any better ideas, I'm all ears.)

7:10: Alright - a commercial for Outback! They should sponsor the show or something.

7:12: Speaking of Outback, Bob Stevenson's house does a pretty decent job of resembling the Down Under steakhouse...

7:15: Amanda is a child. She's gonna cry now, isn't she?

7:17: Turnabout is fair play in the game of Survivor. I'm not sure if Russell's decision to hide the fact that he found the idol is a good thing or not, but it's hard to fault him for it, at least in terms of emotions. Strategically, it's a pretty bad play. It's not as though the ladies aren't going to find out that you have it (and have been hiding it) eventually. You have (had?) a strong alliance with Parvati and Danielle - why risk that over some hurt feelings? Share the idol with them, but retain possession of it this time, and you'll be fine.

7:24: Lost in all this back-slapping by Russell is this question: what the hell did he need that clue for? How come he hadn't found the idol before the reward challenge winners even came back from Stevenson's house?

7:26: Uh, Sandra and Candace - I have some bad news. You're each doing badly at this game if you're in the role of swing vote at this point. Even should your plan work, you're the low woman on the totem pole (ah, memories of Stick...). Why not get with Jeri and Colby and create a team of four unbeknownst to the other players? Worst case scenario, you force the remaining players to bond together (haha - Rupert and Russell on the same team) to force a tie next week.

7:28: Mrs. Fletch doesn't like the card-building Immunity Challenge, but I dig this one. Wasn't it used as the challenge to get to a final three or something in a previous season? A tense, tough exercise (for the mind this time).

7:29: Oh, and something tells me J.T. would win this challenge were he still in the game.

7:30: Players not named Russell or Jeri: what the hell is wrong with you? Why are you watching them when there's always a chance that their towers could fall to the ground?

7:31: Of course, Jeri won the challenge as I was typing that. Whatever - point still stands.

7:32: "Even Coach, who I don't care about, but...I'll stick him in there, too." - Sandra talking about people she's winning one for the Gipper for (aka getting rid of Russell). Nice.

7:36: I guess I'm happy for Jeri and all, but damned if she hasn't been flying under the radar a lot here this season, seemingly being on no one's team at any given point. In other words, I'll be upset if she ends up going too far in the game.

7:38: Are you Team Villains or Team Heroes? And will Russell play his Hidden Immunity Idol? I sure as hell would if I were him.

7:41: I just realized that I've been spelling Candice's name wrong all season. Who the hell spells it with an "i?" Thanks for helping out, guys! It's hard enough to remember to spell Jeri's name correctly...

ETA: Apparently, I'm wrong about this and just don't know that many Canda(i)ces. I've been outnumbered, and just to be sure, left the final vote up to the Google, which had 12+ million hits for ICE and only 8+ million for ACE.

7:43: Could these people be more condescending to Candice? If I were him, I'd definitely be on Team Villain at this point. They're all saying "if this doesn't work, it'll be your fault," but she should be more like "if this doesn't work, it's because I didn't want it to work and I wanted to put myself in a position to win and see you lose." I know she's meek, but I don't think she's stupid.

7:48: Well, I have no idea what's happening tonight. Though from the first two votes shown, it looks as though Russ is safe. Parvati or Amanda? Perhaps a major player is going down tonight.

7:51: Though I'm not sure how good the future looks for Russ, Parv, Selleck, Jeri, and Candice, it's hard to argue with their numbers should they stick together. Although my entire family disagrees, I think Candice made a wise choice (outside of my 7:26 idea). She's higher up with the Villains than she was with the Heroes, and with the way the Heroes were treating her, it's obvious they didn't have plans to keep her much longer.

8:05: Ok, sorry for the delay - we've been arguing about Russell and Candice and who made the right call and who's in charge and whatnot. My final thoughts are that it looks like Russ is indeed going home next week....and my Official Question Request for Amanda is:

I have two, actually. First, are you aware that it looks like you're crying 80% of the time? And second, having had the opportunity to watch this episode, are you ready to admit that the hidden idol belonged to Danielle or will you cling to that sequence as your excuse for leaving the game forever?

The State of the Cabins (4/28/10)

Today is my brother's birthday - wish him a happy day even though he rarely gets on a computer and pretty much never sees his little bro's awesome blog. This is probably a good thing, since he's an insatiable comic book nerd and would probably go on about the Green Lantern or Grendel or some character I've never even heard of and would further alienate my already low (and yet highly valuable) female demographic. Anyway, Happy 37th, Justin.

Movies watched for the first time (non-theatrically) since last week:
None!

I'd feel like a terrible movie geek, but the fact is, it's prime TV-watching season, and Mrs. Fletch and I are watching and/or DVRing more shows now than we ever have before. Some are almost definitely short-term (read: until the season ends), like FlashForward and V, along with that other one that you might have heard is ending. Others are long-term, but have seasons that will be wrapping up soon (Community, Survivor, and Justified). Throw in a NOVA here and there and - whaddaya know - an actual trip to the theaters, and there you have it.

Though I did watch about half of Fred Claus and The Rocker. Yes, I know they're (each) bad, but I enjoy watching crappy, light movies when it's late on Friday or Saturday night and/or early on Sat./Sun. morning and I just want to sleep some more. They lull me and mildly entertain me in the interim.

Music I'm currently obsessed with:
* I've been a fan of dick cheese - er, Richard Cheese, for some time now. The master or lounge-style spin on current pop hits is pretty damned funny in addition to being a pretty smooth singer that fronts a kickass old school band. If you somehow aren't already familiar with his work, go here for starters (I'm pissed they - Lala - don't have his newer albums on there, but you can listen to any song in its entirety once for free).

Anyway, I've had his version of Britney Spears' "(You Drive Me) Crazy" in my head for a few days now. It's so good, it almost makes me like the original. Richard is downright evil sometimes.

Book I'm currently reading:
Since we last spoke here, I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire. Really enjoyed it; possibly even moreso than the first. Pro tip: don't read the back cover of the paperback should you wish to read it. If something happens 200+ pages into a 600ish page novel, I consider that a spoiler. Thankfully, I didn't read it until after I'd passed that point, but it still pissed me off for anyone that had. I'm sure that plot point will be spoiled in the trailer for the July 2 adaptation as well. C'est la vie.

Now I'm nearly haflway through with Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point. This is the first bit of Gladwell I've read, and though it's not bad, I'm a bit surprised that he's as famous and well-respected as he is. The writing isn't terribly memorable on its own, and the themes and thesis of the book are filled with pretty obvious observations, however heavily researched they may be. I guess you could say that I'm getting a bit of food for thought and some minor enjoyment out of reading it, but I wouldn't say that it's particularly memorable or entertaining.

10 Movie Facts About Me Meme

I slithered this way and that, like a cat one might say. But in the end, I still got tagged, this time by Scott aka elgringo of He Shot Cyrus for the titular meme you see above (I've been subsequently tagged by The Movie Mistress as well).

Luckily for my laziness, I've more or less done this twice already, just not with the number 10 attached, so you'll be getting some green (read: recycled) responses, though I'll update where needed.

Shit. Here I thought I was getting off easy, but the two separate times I posted "interesting" stuff about myself, hardly any of it was movie-related. So you get fresh facts after all. Rejoice!

1. The movie I've seen most in the theaters is Pulp Fiction with six viewings. Haven't seen anything else more than three times, and I think I only did that once. Ah, college!

2. (Aha! I get to recycle this one) Those who can, do. Those who can't - wait a sec. I've made a film. Oh yeah. It was for a college course. Two minutes long. Silent. Filmed on a Hi-8 (Super 8? I can't recall). Starred my dad, with my mom and I as co-stars. 'Twas titled Jack the Car and featured a brilliant comedic performance by my dad as a guy that gets...car-jacked (by me). It was set to the song "Stink" by John Lurie (from the Get Shorty soundtrack) and won "Best Comedy" according to my peers, er, classmates.

3. I own X number of DVDs. C'mon, really - I'm expected to count them all? Let's just say it's somewhere between 200 and 400 and call it a day, shall we? It's more than many but less than a lot of others. Though I did come across this site the other day that can and will eventually assist me with this task. It's not perfect, but it's a start.

4. Bob Hope once walked right by me as I was sitting inside the lobby of The Empress Hotel in Victoria, B.C. I was probably 10 at the time.

5. A second (or more) cousin on my father's side "played" (read: flew) one of the Mig pilots in Top Gun. He's credited as James "Jambo" Ray. To my knowledge, I have seen him at a family reunion some 20-something years ago, but I couldn't pick him out of a lineup.

6. Every trip to the theater = one "regular" sized bag of popcorn (free thanks to a Harkins loyalty tee-shirt), a half a box of Raisinets (gotta watch my girlish figure) and a 32 oz. soda ($1.00 in a Harkins loyalty cup). All too often, a trip to the theater = dinner for Mrs. Fletch and I, and we like it that way.

7. I've only walked out on one film ever: the not-even-gratuitous-nudity-could-save-it-bad Strange Wilderness.

8. The three movies I could probably do the best at in reciting line-for-line would be Fletch (natch), Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Office Space.

9. When I was a teenager, I carefully cut out select ads for movies in the larger-than-standard Premiere magazine (basically getting miniature one-sheets) and made a collage of movie "posters" on my wall. [/geek]

10. (Not really about me but still pretty cool) Mrs. Fletch once gave George Clooney a ride from the Phoenix airport to the Planet Hollywood restuarant that used to be open. Just the two of them.

And that does it. This is the part where I say that everyone in the entire blogosphere has already been tagged, thus removing the chain of that responsibility from around my neck. Whoa, that feels better!

LAMBcast #18

After a few weeks off, the LAMBcast has returned, with an enthusiastic discussion of the lone film that's been worthy of being enthusiastic about to hit theaters in recent weeks, Kick-Ass. Ob board was host Nick Jobe, along with Mike Mendez and Mr. Last LAMB Standing himself, Travis McCollum. Listen up as the gents dissect the Matthew Vaughn flick, briefly discuss some trailers, including the revolting Human Centipede (which Travis has had the misfortune of already seeing), as well as not one or two but three games of Last LAMB Standing.

As usual, the music, as provided royalty-free by Kevin MacLeod's Incompetech website, is the bomb. Big thanks to Kevin for providing this service.

You can find us on iTunes; just go to the Podcasts section and search for "LAMBcast." And hey - while you're on iTunes, why don't you go ahead and either rate the LAMBcast or write a review of it. Better yet, do both! It'll help us get noticed by the overlords at Apple and earn worldwide fame...or something like that.
